House sitting in France and how much I appreciate a hot shower
March 25, 2016
As I mentioned in my previous blog, we arrived over a week ago in our 'house sitting house' in Castillion-en-Couserans. A beautiful house with a big garden and an awesome view. The location is perfect because you have the feeling that you are in the middle of the mountains without feeling 'locked' up and a very good road to the nearby town only 20 minutes driving. This town is Saint Girons and has also a big Intermarche, Mr. Bricolage, multiple other big shops, a market on Saturday etc. So all you need you can get it there as well within 11 km driving (or biking).
The owners of house are really kind and have showed us what the meaning is of trust. Without ever meeting in person, they trusted us their house here in the Pyrenees while they are in Portugal. Personally I find this amazing. If you want to know how we got in touch: check out mindmyhouse.com!
So as I mentioned it is an old house but in a great shape. Although at day one I couldn't get a hot shower. The water was semi warm but not warm enough to actually shower and wash your hair. I got some tools and opened up the shower tap to see if it was just the temperature button (or however you call that part). Felt already like big thing! Unfortunately nothing changed. And at the sink the water did get hot so I already figured out it was something in the shower.
Well, to cut a long story short: I was allowed by the owners to replace the shower tap with a new one. Closing down the water, getting the old one off and drive to Saint Girons to get a new one. Screwed that one on, tested if nothing leaked and tadaaa!!! After in total 4 days I could finally have a hot shower again! That made me realize how much I appreciate that. There are a lot of things that I have learned to live without the past months. But a hot shower isn't one of them. At least not during winter times...
Having that one covered and being really proud of myself, of course within a day the next project started. The sink in the kitchen didn't want to drain... Well for this I asked Dimitris to do it. That I really really hate to do. Drain opened, a lot of stuff came out, closed it up again and done. Ah nope... Now another part of the drain under the sink started leaking. Bummer! Although it is just a few drops a day, I can not leave it there to leak. Well I must admit: the bucket it still under and all the flasks with soap etc are on the counter. Let's do that maybe tomorrow!
I find it kind of funny actually to experience this. Also things as of hanging the laundry outside in the garden to dry, everyday getting enough wood inside to light the fireplace (oh yes: I have learned to do that daily), maintain the garden, feeding the birds etc. Not everything is neatly 'arranged' or automated for you here. A new experience that I really like! Although.... I do have to clean our dog at least once a day after she played in the garden...
One other great thing of this place: it has a big and fully, I mean really fully, equipped kitchen. That means cooking and baking again! This includes also failing in baking... I tried to make cake without butter (used yoghurt instead) with apple and no baking soda. Well: don't do that. Still trying to figure out where to get baking soda around here. Luckily my mother is coming next week Friday and she can bring some!
