Seeing 'your city' through the eyes of a tourist is something I find awesome. You suddenly see parts that you normally never notice. You see the beauty of the city and also the ugly parts that you normally don't notice. You look at your 'own people' like you see them for the first time, how tall they are for example. And every detail of the city catches your eye.
I am back in Amsterdam and our friend Vassilis is visiting us from Greece for a long weekend. Showing him around my old neighbourhood and biking through the city, makes me actually see my city again. After not being able to really appreciate it for a long time, I am able to do so again. Amsterdam is an awesome city, with beautiful buildings, quiet streets, a lot of new and creative initiatives and a lot of parks.
The first day we biked around the entire city; from the west through the touristic centre, all the way to the east and back home through the south and the famous Vondelpark. Drinking coffee, eating 'haring' with onions, drinking jenever and Dutch sweet liqueurs, finishing it all of with Belgium beers and 'bitterballen' including a desert of stroopwafels. A high speed introduction of Amsterdam and the Netherlands for our friend. Secretly also for me again. A good excuse to indulge into this little Dutch things and the feeling of being home.
I admit: I have missed it and I am happy to be here...
