The summer has ended and we are back in Ioannina. It was a summer full of family and friends. First my father and wife came to visit us for 3 long weeks. We have visited Vikos Gorge, hiked to the waterfalls of Illiochori, participated in the Zagori Mountains Race and left the mountains to go camping at Kalamos. For 1 month we camped at the beach. After that my mother came over from Amsterdam and we rented a very nice appartement in Kalamos town to enjoy the other side of the island as well. An awesome view, 400m walk to the beach, nice tavernas and we met a lot of interesting locals.
It was great that I could show my parents where we live in Greece. I am happy to be back here, especially now my family knows where I am. Greece got to me, in many different ways. The people, the nature, the atmosphere, the way of life. I don't know what it is exactly but I feel happy here.
In October I start learning Greek at the University of Ioannina. It is a winter programme that lasts 8 months, 5 mornings a week. I want to learn the language because, even though a lot of Greeks speak English, to really live here and arrange my own things, I need to speak the language. If I now have to go to the doctor, Dimitris needs to come with me. If I want to arrange a house or appartement, Dimitris needs to make the phone calls and arrangements. Etc etc. And most importantly: I am way to *** curious to not know what is talked about around me... So back to school it is!
In the next weeks we will stay with our van in the mountains while we search for a house in/around Ioannina for the winter. In October Dimitris will need to go to the Netherlands for his work, but I will stay here for Greek school. It sounds a bit weird: him being in the Netherlands and me being in Greece... But well, I have another 3 weeks to get used to the idea.
