What does being a nomad means? Am I a nomad... or not?
January 13, 2016
Are you a nomad if you live in a house, even if it is just for a month or two? Are you a nomad if you do have an official 'home address'? Or are you only a nomad when you constantly travel and move around without any post address?
The definition of a nomad according to the Free Dictionary:
A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land.
A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.
Oke. That still doesn't answer my question. If you would move with the seasons, that means you stay at one place during a whole season which lasts several months. Right? So, does that mean that I can say 'I am a nomad' at this point in my life? Or do I just want to sound 'cool' but actually I am not..?
What do you think?
For those who don't know me that well, I will explain a little bit more. Otherwise it is a bit hard to help me answering this question :). Last summer I left Netherlands with a small van to do some traveling around Europe. The plan was to do a whole round: France, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania etc. and then back home. It didn't go as plannend because I got stuck in Greece. So nice here with the sea, the mountains and the great people. But during my stay in Greece, me and my (Greek) boyfriend (ah yes, that is one of the reasons we got stuck in Greece...) figured out that we actually didn't want to back to Amsterdam. We didn't want to go back to working 5 days a week, rushing towards work, home, supermarket, running in the dark, cook, eat, sleep and repeat. Everyday the same view and the same faces around you. The high speed city-life. It didn't fit anymore. But well, we still needed some money. So he started to work partially remotely. That meant he needed to be a month in Netherlands to go to the office and after that he could spend some months working from home. Wherever that home is. We traveled from Greece to Amsterdam, stayed in 3 different houses during 7 weeks while he was working and made a road trip back to Greece. We found for 2 months an appartement nearby Ioannina. It is a try out of course but up till now it feels good. It is also nice to be for 8 weeks at the same spot. But I am already looking forward to discover new areas. By the end of this month we need to go back again. He needs another month at the office and after that... Well we are not sure yet. I am thinking of France and Spain for some months. Have to start searching if there is something like a cheap appartement or some housesitting possibilities. Croatia sounds also good to me but maybe do that when it is spring or summer. Or a month in the UK?
To cut a long story short: we are now hopping from house to house. He still needs to work, so daily traveling with our van is not possible. He needs a desk and good wifi. But we intend not to spend more than two months in one spot and to hop houses across borders.
So what do you think? Am I a nomad or am I not? Please help me out :)
