Our time here in Ioannina is almost ending. Two months; somehow they felt like ages and I am eager to see new things again. But it is also far to soon. I enjoy Greece, I enjoy the nature and the relaxed pace of living here. The people, the sea, the mountains, the food (well: that one my scale doesn't enjoy AT ALL...) and the weather. Everyday when I wake up, I can take a peak at the mountains and see if they are changed or not. Do they have snow today? Or maybe I can not even see them due to the fog.
Many of my friends and family back home thought I would be the 'lucky' one that goes to the sun in Greece during the winter. But I had to reassure them, I will not have better temperatures... December was a good month though: it was sunny with a blue sky. Don't let this fool you: it was also just 7 degrees Celsius. There were days, it was a lot warmer in Amsterdam than here. January started with a lot of rain. We are in between of mountains, so there can be plenty of rain. And a lot of it at the same time.
Last weekend I noticed this immediately. We wanted to go to the mountains so badly, that we went. Even though it rained... Rain clothes on and lets go. The rivers were suddenly huge and strong while before I have only seen them as empty riverbeds. The trail we wanted to take, was taken over by these same rivers so we had to change our plans. A short hike of only 6 km it was. But with a lot of water to cross. When we had only 1 km left to go back to the car, a river crossed our path and there was no way we could jump over it. We chose to get our feet wet: up to our knees with sticks to not let the river drag us with. Carrying the dog and ourselves across and walking back to the car with soaking shoes. Never the less, I loved it.
Now I am lucky, this week the weather changed: even colder but with some sunshine and blue skies. Next weekend will be our last weekend here. A night in a refuge and a big hike is planned with our friends. Hopefully the snow won't spoil it for us and we can get up there safely.
I am going to miss Ioannina, its great mountains, the small and cozy cafeterias, the beautiful colours. But most of all: I am going to miss our friends.
