Yes we made it! In 1 week we drove from Ioannina, Greece back to Amsterdam. It was a bit of a challenge with cold weather, a lot of snow everywhere and temperatures that dropped below -10. We took it slowly and didn’t drive more than 500km a day. All the border crossings went kind of quickly. Only in Hungary we got pulled over for a check. But after going through some bags the guy saw that we did a lot of sports and that was all he needed to know. He wished us a good trip and we were free to go.
In Austria we stayed in this awesome appartement, more a loft, build in the top of a huge barn. We stayed two nights to have little break of driving. Beautiful area but freezing cold! The last night we stayed in a hotel nearby Bonn in Germany. After 6 days of driving I was super stiff and needed to do something. This hotel had a small gym and sauna! Because there were hardly any guests at that moment, we had the gym all to ourselves. It was perfect. Working out, taking a dip in the warm pool and finish it off with sauna. Made me feel like new again.
It has been one week now that we drove into my street in Amsterdam. With my parents waiting outside waving happily. I always feel a bit weird the first days. Have to get used to things I guess. It’s weird to hear Dutch all around you. My first response is to react, to start talking back. Which is of course a bit stupid if I would do that. But well, if you are abroad and you hear Dutch, you always start talking to that person. Also a weird thing: to suddenly see so many Dutch license plates around you…
After being away for over 1,5 year I am really happy to notice that I appreciate Amsterdam again. That I appreciate the Netherlands again. Of course I know that I can not go to beautiful mountains in the weekends, or visit perfect beaches. But I do see other advantages that we have here. I am really glad that I am able to see these now. And Amsterdam is still one of a kind. I am happy to be back.
